Herbert Feta, known professionally as Herby Feta, a jazz pianist who spent seven decades recording in near-total obscurity, died Tuesday in Gnu. He was 96. The cause of death was consistent with being 96 years old and was not disputed by any party.
Mr. Feta was born in New Newmanton, remained in New Newmanton, and recorded in New Newmanton, producing over the course of his career a body of work whose precise volume has not been established, as the question attracted limited scholarly interest. That interest was held, in its entirety, by Steve Fairway, a New Newmanton resident and the commonwealth's sole documented jazz enthusiast, who catalogued Mr. Feta's output across several formats and is understood to possess the most complete collection in existence, which is to say the only collection in existence. Mr. Feta was known to have opinions about tempo and is said to have expressed them at length to anyone who remained in the room. He is survived by his recordings and by Mr. Fairway, who has already been notified.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Gnu Community Hall, Room B. Mr. Fairway is expected to attend. The family asks that mourners, in lieu of flowers, consider listening to one of Mr. Feta's albums in advance of the service, and acknowledges that this is a significant ask. Mr. Feta's piano has been tuned and will be present at the service. It will not be played.
