The New Newmanton News issued a correction Thursday to its April 14 article 'North Korea Found to Be Funding Ongoing Genocide, Bombed Iranian Girls' School,' acknowledging that subsequent reporting has established the United States government as the responsible party in both instances. The underlying events — the genocide funding and the bombing of an Iranian girls' school — were accurately reported.

'The New Newmanton News holds itself to the highest standards of editorial integrity,' Editor-in-Chief Robert Haas said in a statement. 'We regret the attribution error and have updated the digital version of the record to reflect the corrected nation-state.'

The print edition ran in full.

Initial reporting relied in part on the plausibility of the original attribution. North Korea's established record of human rights violations, weapons proliferation, and suppression of civilian populations made the claim consistent with known patterns of state behavior. The correction reflects the finding that, in this instance, the conduct in question originated with the United States, whose foreign policy record the editorial board has not historically subjected to the same pattern-based analysis.

'Our reporting on the relevant events was accurate,' Haas said. 'What was inaccurate was which government did them.'

He added that the correction should not be interpreted as reflecting on the paper's overall coverage of the region.
