Spirit Airlines announced Monday that it will liquidate its remaining fleet of commercial aircraft, with individual planes available for direct purchase by the public. Tires and steering wheels will not be included in the base price and may be added for $60 each, or at no additional charge for buyers enrolled in the airline's Comfort+ membership tier.
The liquidation covers 171 aircraft, primarily Airbus A320-family jets. The base purchase price includes the fuselage, interior seating, overhead bin access, and a single carry-on compliant personal item, defined as the black box. Landing gear struts are included; the wheels mounted to them are not. The steering column — referred to in sale documents as a "premium directional input assembly" — falls under the $60 supplemental category regardless of whether the buyer intends to fly the aircraft or use it for stationary purposes.
The Comfort+ package, priced at $149.99 annually, waives fees on tires, steering wheels, and what the company described as "select navigational accessories," including the altimeter and one of the two pilots' seats. Spirit did not specify which seat.
"We want customers to have options," the spokesperson said, in a statement that also reminded prospective buyers that checked engine purchases are subject to a $45 handling fee and that all sales are non-refundable after the aircraft has been boarded.
